The Power of Clarity: Vision as the Key to Personal Success
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” ~Buddha
Today we are going to explore a topic I have been trained in since my childhood. Something most of the people lack and is a major part of a person’s success. There is been a lot of discussion about this topic but not nearly enough. Very soon I am going to speak on this topic, as a speaker at my alma mater as well.
Vision, it is a very commonly used term in startups and corporates. Most organizations have their VMV or Vision, Mission and Values figured out, be it for-profit or not-for-profit, educational or corporate, almost all organizations. But yet in our personal lives we neglect, Vision.
It is a myth that Vision is not so important in personal life, but I would like to argue otherwise. It is important to visualize your goals for career, finance, family, personality, etc. Most of the people lack this. When I talk to people in the demographic of 18 to 35 years, I find most don’t have Vision. They go with the flow, and contrary to popular belief, that is not how it should be. If you have a Vision, you know the path to attain it, there is a lot of clarity about what you should be doing in the moment. The clarity of what we should be doing gives us a purpose and as we all know, life without a purpose is useless.
When I say everyone should have a Vision, it doesn’t mean that if you don’t get there, than you are a failure. All the points are for trying, however brownie points for reaching there. If you are determined enough you will achieve your goals!
Even though everyone should strive for greatness (here is why), I believe even to live an ordinary life, one has to manifest it. Even if ordinary life can be achieved without a Vision, the satisfaction of achieving it is what makes life interesting. And having this clarity of Vision, has to be taught right from the childhood, at home, at school and at university.
A clear Vision, is a sign of self belief and confidence. It also shows your proactiveness, meaning, it shows that you know what to do and you are more likely to do it. It shows that you are focused and helps you build resilience to overcome any obstacle you face.
When I interview people, most of the time they don’t have clarity about the next 5–10 years let alone final goal. Most of the answers are super generic, it goes something like: “I want to provide my family with all the comforts of the world”. Rarely do I come across answers like, “I want to become as Rich/Intelligent/Charismatic as X person”.
Vision attracts people who are as ambitious as well. And a circle of ambitious people who are dedicated to working on them is all you need to make a world of difference. As you know, you are the average of the people surrounding you, so that will impact you as well.
When Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Sam Altman, or any great leader started out, they had a clear Vision about what they want to achieve. It is possible that goal post shifts a little, for example, from Apple Computers Inc to Apple. But the goal was always clear.
Coming back to the quote in the beginning, “what you think you become”. You have the power to become what you want, provided you know what you want to become. One good exercise that a corporate trainer recommended was to make an idol, someone who you want to follow. Its not necessary that you have to follow their career and do exactly what they did but just develop the qualities that you want to achieve or let them represent the final goal that you want to achieve. This will help you with the clarifying the Vision.
I would like to conclude by saying,
You cannot travel without knowing what your final destination is.
